So your kids want to get dressed up and go trick or treating, but you want to teach them how to make an impact for Jesus. As scary as witches and ghosts can be for kids, sometimes talking with people you don't know can be just as scary for adults. How can you overcome your fear to make an impact on the Kingdom? Harness your kids enthusiasm for trick-or-treat with a "tract-for-treat".
Instructions
1. Let your kids get all dressed up. We definitely recommend avoiding the scary costumes. Help your kids choose a costume that can be fun for them, but still be God honoring. (Check out the costume tip on the Parent Help Page)
2. Put your tracts and invite cards together in pairs.
3. Go door-to-door on your street (for those houses with the light on of course)
4. As you go door-to-door exchange your tracts for candy.
5. Instead of saying "trick or treat" you could say "God Bless You," "Jesus Loves You" or some other encouraging phrase.
The Bottom Line
Your kids get to dress up and load up on candy (good luck at bed-time), and you get to put the Gospel into the hands of several of your neighbors, and you didn't even have to do a lot of talking.
Other Tips
-Always go with your children. You want to make sure they are safe, and it gives you an opportunity to meet the neighbors as well.
-Tape a piece of candy to each of the tracts for better results.
-Use good safety practices while out at night. (Take a flashlight; wear bright colors; stick to areas and streets you are familiar with; etc.)
-Always check your kiddos’ candy before they dig in. Throw out anything suspicious, tampered with, homemade, or unwrapped. If you want to be really cautious, just buy a bunch of different candy and switch it out with what your kids get when you go home. They probably won't even notice.
